A closer up version of my characters Hilda and Narse from "Lets Go Get Em"

This is my first picture of the new year 2013, so I wanted to challenge myself to draw things I either haven't before or have very little experience with. In this case, it was armor, weapons, and creatures.
Hilda and her pet dragon Narse are getting ready for some adventure or other in looting, plundering, or some various other mercenary work or mission. This duo is for hire, if the price is right!
90% done in Paint Tool SAI, 10% finished in Painter X, with my wacom intuos3 tablet.

There's a lot of charm to this. I like how excited she seems to be at the prospect of swinging that ludicrously oversized axe (that she clearly loves, given the sheen and lustre on it!); and her little dragony companion looks joyously demented! If there were something I could suggest that could really help the picture, it's shadows - both Hilda and Narse seem to be floating in the piece - they don't look like they're there. Darker shadows beneath them could really help suggest their place in the environment.
