Hinata Hyuga by Thesis-D Hinata Hyuga by Thesis-D
Hinata Hyuga, from Naruto. :)

I've never drawn her before, let alone painted a portrait, but I'm glad to have finally done it after all this time. :)

There's things I like about how this turned out and things I don't, but that's all part of the process. It was fun. :)

Done with the usual Painter X/tablet combo. :)

Full-view for full details!

Thank you. It depends on whether or not you are going for realism or not in your eyes; in this picture, the eyes are more realistic than they are in the show or manga, so there's a different way to approach drawing and coloring them. If realism doesn't matter or you're going for mostly an anime look, it may not be as important.

What is it about the eyes you are having trouble drawing?

Not drawing eyes themselves but giving them that pretty, pretty almost white color. I could recreate it as best as I could in my own style, but it wouldn't come out as nice as this. But looking at this has given me some ideas, and I think I am going to try them out! ^^ Her lips look really good too.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'white color'. Are you planning to draw Hinata? :)

I'm happy that I could be inspirational to someone else. :)

I mean that her eyes are so light colored. I have a character with violet eyes, but they always come out too dark when I color them. I want them to look more like this...almost ethereal.

Well I have liked your art for a long time. We used to be friends on here, but I deactivated that account because I wanted to focus solely on my own art and ideas instead of fanart which was what got the most attention on my old account.

They key to bringing out certain colors is using complimentary colors. Notice how, Hinatas are are not completely white; there are pink, and greyish tones in there; this brings depth and shape to eyes. The problem with standard anime is you have 1 base color, 1 highlight color, and 1 shading color. This is typical standard anime CG coloring. The only way you're going to get more out of your color is to expand the colors you use, and learn how to blend. Blending is so important, especially for skin, and delicate features.

Really? What was your username back then? I might remember you.

I use markers, so it is just the three colors for me...but I am going to use lighter colors for all three than I was using and see how that comes out.

I was Sidonzo...one of the very few Kon fans on DA. ^^

Thank you. This is an older piece, so I'd like to think I've improved in coloring sense this portrait; I think I have, but there's still room for improvement. Did you choose this one to comment on, rather than the one I posted for comment because of the character or show she's from, or was there another reason? I'm curious. :)

i found this piece a bit deeper in coloring than other
plus it's also a character that i like (lol..)
i actually like WHR too, probably one of my favorite of all your pics, just this particular Hinata pic's color that hooked my eyes :)

I didn't want to assume it was because it was a popular character from a popular anime, but I figured that was the reason. If you're interested in this piece, I do plan on doing more Naruto and others in the future. I definitely want to do one of Sakura, one of my favorites. :)

Why markers in particular? Are they the tools you use the most? You probably could get this effect with markers, you'd just have to be really careful and use varying shades of grey and white.

I miss using traditional media, like markers. I have a set of them, and a huge set of prismacolor pencils I got a long time ago as gifts, and they just sit there. Its just more practical and efficient for me to work digitally these days. You cut out so many steps in a process, and can get into the meat of the drawing really quickly.

I enjoy the process, even when I make irreversible mistakes I feel that I learn more efficiently. The permanence of traditional art can be some-what humbling in that sense, you know what I mean?

I understand what you mean, but the same can be true for digital; yes you can always edit or fix something or delete it completely, but you can also choose to leave it as is, just like traditional. Its just that alot of people like to improve on a picture, even after its finished. I leave most of my pictures be, and only edit and work on things while its still in production.

i love the soft, smooth coloring style on this. ^__^

the way her sleeve wraps around her wrist... it looks too puffy, too circular i think.

nitpick but i think the lips could be slightly bigger and slightly farther down from the nose.

the lines you used in the hair coloring would look better, in my opinion, if they were thinner. and also (another nitpick) remember to have a little more variation on exactly where the light is hitting on the hair. but other than that, your hair coloring is good ^___^
